Lawn Care Tuscaloosa AL: Costs, Companies & Hiring Tips

This page lists lawn care and landscaping companies that serve Tuscaloosa, Alabama, along with what local work actually costs and how to check that a company is licensed before you hire it.

We are not a lawn care company. We do not mow, spray, or take service calls. This is an independent local guide. Every company below is listed on the same terms, and nobody paid to be here.

What lawn care costs in Tuscaloosa

Short version, with sources and caveats in the full cost guide:

ServiceWhat local sources show
Standard mowingGreenPal’s Tuscaloosa page reports a $39 average and a $35 to $50 typical range. Their own March 2026 national release put Tuscaloosa at $61.26. Both are the same company.
Weekly vs. monthlyAcross Alabama, per-visit price rises as visits get less frequent. Monthly costs 9 to 25 percent more per cut than weekly.
AerationGreenPal lists $72 to $88 typical for Tuscaloosa; individual local pros there quote $41 to $79.
Leaf removal$55 average booked price locally, with a $50 to $63 typical range.
Hedge and shrub trimmingFifteen named Tuscaloosa operators quote between $32 and $102 per visit.
Spring cleanup$128 average booked, $116 to $143 typical.
Treatment programsNo Tuscaloosa provider publishes prices. All three local ones quote only.

Two things to keep in mind. Marketplace “starting at” figures are advertising, not averages. And the marketplaces contradict each other badly — GreenPal’s two Tuscaloosa mowing numbers differ by 57 percent, with no methodology disclosed on either. Treat every figure on this page as a reference point for a conversation, not a quote.

One local factor worth knowing: the City of Tuscaloosa’s free trash pickup explicitly excludes “any waste generated by a compensated person (contractor, tree trimmer, etc.).” Your own bagged leaves get collected free. A contractor’s cannot be, so haul-away gets priced in. That is why cleanup quotes vary so much on disposal method.

Before you hire: check the license yourself

This is the part almost nobody does, and in Alabama it is genuinely checkable in about two minutes.

If a company applies pesticides, fertilizer, or weed control for money, Alabama requires them to be licensed. The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries issues a Commercial Pesticide Applicator permit, and the relevant category for lawns is Ornamental and Turf Pest Control.

The distinction that matters: OTPS is the for-hire credential. OTPC holders, per Alabama Extension, “cannot charge a fee for services” — that category is for golf course and municipal employees. Anyone spraying your lawn for money needs OTPS.

Separately, the business itself needs a Horticulture Professional Services license from ADAI, currently $175 a year, covering Landscape Design (LD), Tree Surgery (TS), Setting of Landscape Plants (SLP), and Ornamental and Turf Pest Control (OTPS).

You can look it up. ADAI runs a public applicator search where you can search by name and county and see license type, permit number, and expiration date. Search the operator’s name, filter to Tuscaloosa County, and confirm the permit is OTPS and unexpired.

Why this matters practically: several companies listed below advertise weed control or fertilization while describing themselves only as “licensed and insured.” That phrase carries no specific meaning. The license either exists in ADAI’s database or it does not.

There is also a city business license requirement. The City of Tuscaloosa requires one for anyone operating in the city or its police jurisdiction, which extends roughly three miles past the city limits. Worth noting the city’s own disclaimer, though: a business license “shall not constitute a certification, endorsement, finding, representation, warranty, or guarantee by the city” that the business is competent or lawful. It proves they paid a fee, nothing more.

Why there are no star ratings on this page

Because we could not verify any.

Google, Yelp, BBB, Facebook, Angi, and Thumbtack all block automated access to their review data. We are not going to reprint a rating we have not confirmed, and we are not going to launder a company’s own self-published review badge into something that looks independent.

Two companies below display review figures on their own websites — Crawford Lawn Solutions shows a Google badge reading 5.0 from 31 reviews, and The Grounds Guys of Tuscaloosa shows 4.9 from 89 reviews. Those are the companies’ own claims on their own sites, observed August 17, 2026. We have not confirmed either against the platform.

If ratings matter to your decision, open Google Maps and the BBB yourself and read them. That takes five minutes and gives you better information than any directory’s aggregate score.

Worth knowing: despite the name, the branch address they publish is in Northport.

Weed Man and TruGreen

Both are treatment-only — fertilization, weed, insect, and disease control. Neither mows. Neither maintains a Tuscaloosa-area office; Weed Man services the area from Hoover, and TruGreen publishes no local branch address at all. Their advertised review counts are national aggregates across the U.S. and Canada, not Tuscaloosa figures.

Questions worth asking before you sign

  1. Are you licensed with ADAI for OTPS? Only relevant if they will apply anything. Ask for the permit number and check it.
  2. What is the mowing height and how often? Alabama Extension recommends 1 to 2 inches for bermuda, zoysia, and centipede, and 2.5 to 4 inches for St. Augustine. A crew that scalps your lawn every visit is creating the weed problem you will pay them to fix later. See our mowing guide.
  3. Who hauls the debris, and is it in the price? Contractors cannot use the city’s free pickup.
  4. Weekly or biweekly, and what does each cost? Less frequent is more per visit, not less.
  5. Is there a contract? At least one local provider advertises no contract as a differentiator, which means others require one.
  6. Proof of insurance. Ask to see it rather than accepting “licensed and insured” as a phrase.

Do it yourself

Seven guides built on Alabama Cooperative Extension research, NOAA climate normals for the Tuscaloosa airport station, and USDA and Geological Survey of Alabama data.

Why a Tuscaloosa-specific site

Because generic lawn advice fails here in specific ways.

The city is split between USDA hardiness zones 8a and 8b — the line runs through town. Alabama Extension limits St. Augustinegrass to the southern half of the state on cold tolerance, and recommends centipedegrass for central and south Alabama only. Tuscaloosa sits right at those edges. Meanwhile tall fescue, the grass people reach for in shade, is adapted to north Alabama at best; Extension calls that region fescue’s southern limit, and we are south of it.

Then there is the rain. Tuscaloosa averages 52.6 inches a year, but August, September and October are the three driest months — exactly when warm-season grass is still growing hard. Irrigation demand here peaks when most people have mentally checked out for the season.

Advice written for Mobile or for Nashville gets all of that wrong, in opposite directions.

Send us photos of your work

If you run a lawn care or landscaping company here, we would rather show your finished lawns than stock photography. Send photos through the contact page and we will publish them credited to your company, with a link to your site.

Free, and it buys nothing — not placement, not a friendlier write-up, not removal of a competitor. Those rules are in our editorial standards and they do not bend for photo contributors either. Daylight shots of the whole lawn work best, and please confirm the homeowner is comfortable with the photo being published. We will not publish an address.
